Hvac Damper Open Or Closed In Winter
You may want to close the dampers on ducts that lead to small or unused.
Hvac damper open or closed in winter. As advised by many articles and how to videos out there i usually close the dampers in the ducts leading to the first floor in the summer so that the cold air from the air conditioner is forced to the upstairs vents and then sinks down to the lower level and vice versa in the winter so the warm. By adjusting the damper you can reduce or increase the amount of air entering every room or area of your home. You may find when the seasons change over that you don t fully close a particular damper that was open and the winter position might be 50 closed and not completely closed. Resist the urge to write the opposite season in the opposite position of the current one.
Step 2 close any balancing dampers that lead to rooms that are sufficiently cooled by the air conditioning. Not even sure it is called a damper but it is the big round flap aprox 6 inches across at the end of a round duct that terminates approximately 6 8 ft from the furnace near the ceiling. Is the hvac damper open or closed the damper on the duct next to furnace is marked summer winter. How much to open or close the dampers is probably going to be a personal preference as well as depend on the layout of the house and ductwork so you may need to experiment a bit.
As such it s always hotter on the second floor than the first floor. Turn the metal levers so they point across the ducts perpendicular to the path the ducts follow. Wait to label the opposite season until you ve taken things for a spin. You can see two black manual duct damper handles on the white asbestos paper covered heating ducts in the photo at above left.
Manual heating or air conditioning zone dampers are mechanical doors that are manually by hand open or closed in order to control the amount of warm or cool air flowing to a particular room or area in a building. With all the balancing dampers open the air conditioning air flow isn t restricted. Dampers are plate shaped device which opens or close to regulate the amount of air that passes through the duct and vents. I read the handle should be parallel to the duct in the summer indicating it is open.
I don t know if this is good or not. Let s say if outside is 90f and thermostat is calling for cooling than fan in air handler turns. It s operating at full capacity. It is an air intake and i can t recall if the technician told me to close it in the summer or conversely open in the winter.
In the winter this is reversed so you want more warm air going to the lower stories and less going to the upper. I m new to havc stuff i have question regarding fresh air damper which connected to house return. Where are dampers located. I have a two story home.
Fresh air dumper should be in closed position or open when cooling and heating. I have a picture if someone tells me how to post. I ve checked recently in heating and cooling mode damper is open all the time. Apparently closing it will.
This duct is not straight but slightly curves.
